16 Dogs Rescued as Vietnamese Dog Meat Restaurant Shuts Down
Sixteen dogs, once destined for slaughter, were rescued from a dog meat restaurant and slaughterhouse in Dong Nai, Viet Nam. Humane Society International (HSI) led the effort, finding the dogs caged, frightened, and in poor health.
Among them were two still wearing collars, reminders of their past lives as cherished pets.
A Second Chance for Dogs and Humans
The dogs were transported to a temporary facility, where they are now receiving veterinary care, vaccinations, and rehabilitation. They will soon be assessed for adoption into loving homes.
In a surprising twist, the restaurant owner, Mr. Cuong, expressed his relief at leaving the dog meat business. “This work doesn’t make me happy at all. I don’t want to kill these animals anymore, it makes me feel bad,” he shared.
With support from HSI’s Models for Change program, Mr. Cuong is transitioning to a new livelihood, selling paint and gas cylinders—an enterprise he described as “a much more peaceful business.”
Fighting Cruelty and Building Awareness
This rescue underscores the dark realities of the dog meat trade, where dogs are stolen, transported in inhumane conditions, and slaughtered. The trade also poses public health risks, including the spread of rabies and other diseases.
A 2023 Nielsen poll revealed a cultural shift in Viet Nam, with 68% of respondents supporting a ban on the dog meat trade. Working alongside local officials, HSI aims to strengthen regulations, combat animal cruelty, and protect public health.
“We are honored to lead this effort to eradicate the cruelty of this industry wherever it exists,” said Kitty Block, President and CEO of HSI.
This rescue is a poignant reminder of the bond between humans and animals, highlighting the potential for a kinder, more humane future.
