Amish Farmers Open Off-the-Grid Meat Processing Plant in Aroostook

In Smyrna, Maine, Amish farmers Conrad Kauffman and Jonas Esch have transformed a large storage shed into Moosehead Meats, an off-the-grid meat processing plant.

USDA-approved, Moosehead Meats offers custom processing, vacuum packing, and freezing for customers, processing beef, pork, lamb, and goat.

Esch highlights the facility’s local importance, saying, “Processing is one of the most common missing links found in small farms to be successful.”

Their goal is to provide sustainable, locally sourced meats, ensuring a pure food supply while taking care of the land.

Powering the facility off-grid, the duo uses solar panels, batteries, and a diesel-powered cooler. A wood stove not only heats the building but also fuels a smoker for their signature applewood smoked ham and bacon.

Customers can bring their animals for custom processing or purchase meat from Esch’s own grass-fed stock.

Moosehead Meats prides itself on humane treatment of animals, with Esch personally walking livestock to the processing area, reducing stress.

Kauffman emphasizes that they adhere strictly to USDA regulations to ensure animals are humanely killed.
