Beyond Meat to Pay $7.5 Million Over Protein Content Allegations
Plant-based food giant Beyond Meat has agreed to a $7.5 million settlement to resolve claims that it exaggerated the protein content and quality of its products.
This settlement follows a series of class action lawsuits filed between May 2022 and January 2023, accusing the company of misleading advertising. The lawsuits were consolidated, and the settlement agreement was finalized on July 8, 2024.
What’s Behind the Settlement?
Based in El Segundo, California, Beyond Meat is renowned for its plant-based meat substitutes like burgers, sausages, and steak. While the company denies any wrongdoing, it opted to settle to “avoid the costs of further litigation,” according to a spokesperson.
Beyond Meat’s products often claim to offer around 20 grams of plant-based protein per serving. However, the lawsuits alleged these claims overstated the actual protein content and its bioavailability.
Despite the settlement, the company maintains that its advertising complies with industry standards.
Who’s Eligible for a Payout?
Consumers who purchased Beyond Meat products between May 31, 2018, and August 14, 2024, may qualify for a payout.
To claim their share, individuals must submit a claim form by April 14, 2025, via the settlement website BeyondMeatProteinSettlement.com or by calling 833-739-3317.
Financial Challenges Persist
This settlement comes at a time when Beyond Meat is grappling with broader financial issues. Rising ingredient costs have led the company to increase prices aggressively, impacting consumer demand.
Reuters reports that Beyond Meat is actively working to cut logistics and materials expenses as it faces stiff competition from cheaper plant-based alternatives. Adding to its challenges, the company’s stock has fallen by 5%.
This settlement underscores the growing scrutiny of plant-based food claims, highlighting the industry’s need for transparency as it continues to evolve. For consumers, it serves as a reminder to read labels carefully and stay informed.
