CDC Issues Warning on Deadly Listeria Outbreak in Ready-to-Eat Meats

A serious Listeria outbreak has the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sounding the alarm.

Linked to ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, the outbreak has sickened 11 people across four states. Tragically, one infant in California has died, and nine others have been hospitalized.

The CDC’s investigation identified Yu-Shang Food’s ready-to-eat meat and poultry products as the source. Items recalled include pork hock, chicken feet, pork feet, duck neck, beef shank, and pork tongue.

Some of these products might still be lurking in refrigerators or freezers, posing a risk to households.

What You Should Know About Listeria

Listeria is no ordinary foodborne illness. It’s a stealthy pathogen capable of surviving in cold environments, spreading to foods and surfaces like an invisible enemy.

Symptoms of infection include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, and for some, more severe issues like confusion or seizures. Symptoms can appear within two weeks but may take up to 10 weeks to manifest.

Certain groups are more vulnerable, including pregnant individuals, those aged 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant people face a double-edged sword, as the infection can lead to complications for both mother and child.

How to Protect Yourself

The CDC recommends disposing of any recalled items or returning them to the store. “Additionally, it is recommended to clean refrigerators, containers, and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled foods,” the CDC advises.

If symptoms arise after consuming these products, seek medical attention immediately. The earlier Listeria is caught, the better the outcome.

This outbreak underscores the importance of vigilance in food safety. Listeria doesn’t play by the rules, but by staying informed, you can take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. Stay tuned for updates and keep your kitchen free of this hidden danger.
