FreshDirect offers a wide variety of meats and produce for busy users wanting an easy grocery shopping option. But is the grocery delivery service, which focuses on a wide range of products, as good as other meat-only sites? In this FreshDirect review, we'll share the in-depth research and taste test that we did. Will they meet our expectations?
What is FreshDirect?
FreshDirect is an online store that specializes in organic produce, fresh food, and other organic groceries for health-conscious individuals. This online grocery store allows you to order groceries and have them delivered to your home, something beneficial amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
One main benefit when shopping with the company is consumer convenience as they deliver orders around your schedule and delivery time slot. You can choose your time slot so that your order arrives when you are home. This is an option that we don't normally see in other similar services.
The major downside is that they only deliver to certain parts of the Tri-State jurisdiction (New York, Jersey, and Connecticut) and greater Philadelphia.
- Wide delivery window
- Many different food types
- Delivery is based on your time slots
- Organic and whole food options
- Delivery pass is available
- 60-day free delivery trial
- Limited shipping area
- High delivery costs for certain places
- Many complaints about user support feature
- Strict cancellation steps and refund policy
What is the product selection like?
The online grocery store offers wide deals of fresh produce and perishables. The shopper facility inventory includes meats, vegetables, cookies, milk, cold cuts and cheese, baked goods, frozen groceries, prepared foods, and alcoholic beverages. We love that they use reusable bags as packaging for their services. Their stock deals are also quite extensive, with hard to find categories for meal planning. Options to add to your cart include items from these sections:
- Beef Section- steaks, ground beef, ribs, roasts, kosher
- Pork - chops, tenderloin, ribs, sausage
- Lamb - chops, cutlets, racks, roasts
- Veal - ground veal, stew, cutlets, ribs
- Chicken Section- whole, split, ground chicken
- Turkey - whole, turkey breast
- Duck - duck breast, whole duck
- Bison - ground, sirloin tip, rib eye
- Seafood Section - Crab, Lobster, Mussels, fish fillets
How is the FreshDirect quality?
The quality of the food items varies per option. The vast majority of groceries are mid to advanced level in food quality, mostly geared towards specialty diet for a health-minded person. Some examples include specialty meat, cheeses, coffee, and produce items, and more obscure Kosher products.
One thing to note is that even though the groceries are of a higher caliber, there are many online stories of vegetables and all other items arriving damaged a lot of times. A research firm noted these complaints became more prominent after their move to a new and more complicated warehouse in 2018 (1).
What are the FreshDirect prices like?
The prices on the shopping site vary depending on the things that you are looking to add to your cart. The costs can be similar to what consumers would experience in a brick and mortar store for everyday supermarket and grocery shopping. Some of the less common things can be more expensive in amount and pricing than you might find shopping for groceries usually. However, you may also watch out for any sales discount for a particular item.
FreshDirect Main Areas
The delivery slot location is limited to four main places - Tri-State, greater Philadelphia, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. The complete list of cities, boroughs, and regions they deliver groceries to includes:
- New York City
- The Bronx
- Staten Island
- Long Island City
- Nassau County
- Suffolk County
- New Jersey
- Northern Jersey
- Central Jersey
- Southern Jersey
- Greater Philadelphia
- Washington D.C
- Jersey Shore (summer only)
- Hamptons (summer only)
According to the company’s site and email, they offer a delivery window of the same day, next day, or up to a week ahead with multiple delivery time slots for customers to choose from. They claim that first-time ordering and reordering are also relatively easy.
The main inconvenience of using the online grocer is their extremely limited transporting location for delivery slots. As they are confined to the Tri-State, most US residents will be unable to fulfill their grocery list for the second time. While we give credit that shopping on their groceries platform is a convenient experience for deliveries, it isn’t accessible for most people.
Based on our company’s research, we found them to be above average in menu shopping deals. They offer varieties of hard to find beef, fruits, and other items in your grocery list, which may provide good value for your money. However, they do have quite a bit of complaint that can cause concern within the communities.
The FD grocery shopping service has mixed response from shoppers. The majority of complaints across various platforms source from user system support problems, credit card and billing issues, and delivery issues. There are some complaints about no one in the support staff replying to queries. There are also a lot of customer accounts of delivered products and grocery items being damaged, pushing the people to ask for store credit and question the process.
The grocer has an A+ rating on the BBB website and is accredited, meaning they pay the accreditation fees. Their user rating on the BBB is 1 star out of 5 with 36 registered complaints (2).
The grocery delivery service has a rating of 2.3 out of five stars based on 19 people’s rating—the majority of complaints on the site stem from user support issues (3).
What is the delivery fee for FreshDirect?
The delivery fee depends on where exactly you live. The company delivers throughout the upper eastern United States from New York City and the surrounding counties down to New Jersey and as low as Washington, D.C. FreshDirect delivery fees can range between $5 and up to $15.
Does FreshDirect bill any extra fees?
Besides the delivery fees, if you cancel orders within your time, you can expect to pay 100% of the perishable items and a 25% restocking fee on a non-perishable order, with the rest received as a credit.
What is the minimum order for FreshDirect?
The minimum order for FreshDirect is thirty dollars for almost all locations around New York, Jersey, and other states in their transporting jurisdiction. The exception to this is the Hamptons, which has a minimum order requirement of $99.
Where does FreshDirect get their food?
FreshDirect source their stock from a wide network of suppliers that include family farms, fisheries, and other farming establishments that provide good animal produce. The company delivers their products right to your home, so you don't need to pay a visit to the grocery store.
I've been using them since 2012 when I was pregnant, and my daughter was born in NYC. So long as the order arrived, it was fine. But if something goes wrong, Fresh Direct customer service can be unhelpful.

Is FreshDirect Worth It?
After our FreshDirect taste test and based on customer reviews, we found that the platform is average. We don’t like their limited shipment range, lengthy shipping time, and many poor user ratings. Instead, we prefer ButcherBox for home meat deliveries.
They offer a convenient way to have steak delivered to your home each month without the hassle. You can also curate your own box and have it delivered to your home, free of charge. Though they don’t offer other groceries, their steak deals are excellent.
For a solid selection of beef, check out ButcherBox.
