Gen Z’s Appetite Fuels Growth in Premium Meats Market

Premium meats are sizzling their way into the hearts—and kitchens—of younger consumers, with Gen Z leading the charge.

According to the 2023 Power of Meat report, product quality tops the list of priorities for 53% of meat consumers. This hunger for higher quality is driving a surge in premium cuts, from Angus to Wagyu beef.

“While not every consumer wants premium meat products, there is strong interest in the category, particularly among younger, food-centric consumers,” shared Britney Banuelos, Tyson’s senior brand manager for beef and pork marketing.

These consumers seek to elevate their at-home dining experiences, and premium meats deliver the perfect recipe for indulgence.

Pandemic Sparks a Taste for Quality

Cargill Protein’s senior marketing manager, Hannah Kern, emphasized how the pandemic expanded the market for high-end meats.

“Beef consumption had been on the rise prior to the pandemic, but the pandemic broadened and grew the consumer base for premium meats,” Kern explained.

Now, as restaurant visits remain below pre-COVID levels, many are choosing to recreate restaurant-quality meals at home.

“Consumers are looking for more cost-effective ways to get great meals, and cooking more premium meats at home is a way to do that,” Kern noted.

Social Media and Innovation Ignite Growth

Gen Z’s penchant for exploring new recipes and techniques often begins online, making social media a vital tool for inspiration. Producers like Cargill are responding by launching innovative products.

Their summer lineup included premium source-grind patties and seasoned varieties, catering to celebrations and everyday meals alike.

Premium meats also appeal to health-conscious eaters, Kern explained. “Not only are these shoppers getting the protein they need to reach their health goals, but premium beef allows consumers to eat flavorful, juicy, and tender products.”

While inflation challenges some shoppers, premium meats remain a shining centerpiece for those craving quality and culinary creativity.
