Lawmakers Push for Justice After 10 Deaths Linked to Boar’s Head Listeria Outbreak
A deadly listeria outbreak tied to Boar’s Head Deli meats has claimed its tenth victim, sparking outrage and calls for justice. The outbreak, which has led to the hospitalization of 59 people across 19 states, maybe even more widespread than currently known.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria infections can take up to 10 weeks to develop, suggesting that the full impact of this outbreak is yet to be seen.
At the heart of the controversy is Boar’s Head’s Virginia facility, where unsanitary conditions were uncovered during USDA inspections. Inspectors found mold, insects, rusty equipment, and even pools of blood on the floor.
A “rancid smell in the cooler” and major deficiencies in the plant’s physical structure were also noted. Despite repeated violations, production continued, prompting lawmakers to demand answers.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Rosa DeLauro have taken swift action, sending a letter to the USDA and the Department of Justice, urging them to investigate Boar’s Head and consider criminal charges.
In their letter, they expressed frustration with the company’s failure to correct these issues, stating, “The time for action is long overdue.” They also called for heightened inspections of Boar’s Head facilities and more stringent penalties for repeated non-compliance.
In response to the outbreak, Boar’s Head recalled its liverwurst product, which was identified as the root cause of the listeria contamination.
The company has since shut down the Virginia plant responsible for the tainted meat and has promised to implement a company-wide food safety overhaul. Boar’s Head described the incident as a “dark moment in our company’s history,” vowing to emerge stronger and safer.
Consumers are urged to check their homes for recalled products, which bear “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” inside the USDA inspection mark.
Listeria, one of the deadliest foodborne pathogens, can cause severe symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and in extreme cases, seizures and death. The CDC advises anyone with these products to discard them immediately.
As investigations continue, the pressure is on Boar’s Head to take full accountability for its role in this deadly outbreak.
