Ministry of Trade Seeks to Strengthen Red Meat Industry Amid Market Challenges
The Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply has launched an in-depth evaluation of Jordan’s red meat sector, aiming to boost competition and ensure fairness in the market.
According to ministry spokesperson Yanal Barmawi, this initiative is a crucial step toward addressing the industry’s long-standing challenges, including market imbalances that have impacted both consumers and producers.
Barmawi emphasized that the ministry’s Competitiveness Directorate is conducting a thorough review of the sector, paying particular attention to structural and legislative barriers that have limited market growth.
The aim is to foster an environment where fair competition can thrive, which will ultimately lead to a healthier and more sustainable market.
In the first nine months of 2024, the Competitiveness Directorate has already managed 82 cases concerning various economic sectors, ranging from complaints to mergers and consultations related to competitive practices.
Agricultural economist Mahmoud Jawdat shared his insights, stating that the solution to improving competitiveness in the red meat industry involves addressing a range of issues.
He pointed out that the sector faces significant structural and regulatory challenges, which need to be tackled through reforms.
Additionally, lowering entry barriers for new producers and suppliers could drive down production and distribution costs, making the market more accessible and affordable.
Mohammed Farouq, a local meat production group employee, stressed the importance of strict oversight to prevent monopolistic practices that often result in inflated prices.
Farouq echoed the need for regulatory reforms, noting that strengthening the sector’s infrastructure—particularly in areas of production and distribution—would be vital to ensuring its long-term sustainability.
The ministry’s actions are set against a backdrop of growing concerns over monopolies and price hikes, with many stakeholders advocating for changes that can restore balance in the market.
With these efforts, the ministry aims to create a more competitive, transparent, and fair marketplace for red meat products in Jordan.
