Mississippi Declares November as Wild Game Meat Donation Month to Fight Hunger

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, a passionate outdoorsman, has declared November as Wild Game Meat Donation Month.

This initiative, part of a broader movement supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA), highlights the generosity of hunters and their efforts to combat hunger across the state and nation.

Hunters Sharing to Fight Hunger

Governor Reeves’ proclamation joins eight other states in encouraging hunters to donate surplus game meat. This effort aligns with America’s long-standing Hunters for the Hungry (HFH) program, which has provided essential protein to countless families.

According to Feeding America, hunger affects one in seven Americans, making programs like these vital.

In Mississippi, the HFH program operates under the name Hunter’s Harvest. This partnership between the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, and the Mississippi Wildlife Federation channels venison donations to those in need.

“Many families have no dependable source of protein in their diets,” the program notes. Venison, being both protein-rich and low in fat, meets this critical dietary need.

How Hunters Can Contribute

Mississippi hunters have multiple ways to participate:

  • Donate a pound or more of ground venison when collecting processed game.
  • Contribute a field-dressed deer, covering the processing fee or relying on Hunter’s Harvest funding.
  • Financially support the program to aid the processing and distribution of meat.

These contributions are distributed statewide through the Mississippi Food Network and partnering nonprofits.

A Call to Action for Mississippi Hunters

NRA research reveals hunters share over 119 million pounds of game meat annually, but meat processors often report shortages.

With Mississippi receiving $14 million in conservation funds in 2024 through the Pittman-Robertson Program, hunters already contribute significantly to conservation efforts.

Governor Reeves’ proclamation serves as a reminder of hunters’ vital role in providing both sustenance and support. To learn more or locate participating processors, visit the Hunter’s Harvest website.
