New York Beef Council’s Stockmanship & Stewardship Event Elevates Animal Welfare and Producer Skills

The New York Beef Council’s recent Stockmanship & Stewardship event, held in Hamburg, New York, brought together 124 beef and dairy producers from across the region for an immersive educational experience aimed at strengthening industry standards in animal welfare, beef quality, and operational efficiency.

Hosted on October 25-26, in collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension, this event marked the Council’s commitment to providing local producers with vital skills, insights, and certifications to support their work in a competitive market.

The event’s sessions were specifically tailored to address key aspects of modern beef and dairy production. Topics covered included consumer insights, advanced strategies for managing cull cows, optimizing grazing systems, beef-on-dairy crossbreeding opportunities, and BQA (Beef Quality Assurance) Transportation protocols.

These interactive, round-robin sessions allowed participants to gain practical knowledge from top industry experts. The event also served as a platform for producers to achieve their BQA certification, underscoring their dedication to quality and safety standards.

Virginia cattlewoman Kate Maher, who attended the event, emphasized its value, saying, “The NY Stockmanship & Stewardship event was outstanding. Each session offered practical information that I can use to become a better beef producer.

It was also a fantastic opportunity to connect with other farmers and share ideas. The experience was absolutely worth the time, and the Rancher Resilience Grant helped cover most of the costs.”

Chrissy Claudio, co-coordinator of the New York BQA program, highlighted the success of the event, noting, “The strong turnout at this event reflects the commitment of New York’s producers to upholding the highest standards in animal care, quality assurance, and professional development.”

Claudio also expressed appreciation for the collaborative learning environment, saying, “It was inspiring to witness the exchange of knowledge and best practices among our local producers.”

The New York Beef Council is funded by the National Beef Checkoff Program, with a mission of promoting beef demand through research, education, and industry support.

By organizing events like Stockmanship & Stewardship, the Council continues to foster a resilient and high-quality beef industry, ensuring that producers are well-equipped to meet the evolving demands of consumers.
