NPPC’s Dr. Ashley Johnson Provides Crucial Nutrition Update at International Meat Secretariat Meeting
Dr. Ashley Johnson, director of food policy for the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), recently addressed the International Meat Secretariat (IMS) meeting, offering insight into the challenges and trends facing global meat consumption.
Representing over 75% of global meat production, the IMS gathers key industry figures to discuss meat production, export, and policy issues.
During the meeting, Dr. Johnson emphasized the growing global shift toward reducing meat consumption, aligning with the ongoing review of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which may advocate for reduced meat intake.
Highlighting the nutritional importance of meat, Johnson stated that “maintaining current consumption levels is critical” for sustaining a nutritious and balanced diet.
The IMS Nutrition Committee is actively working on strategies to address these recommendations and promote meat as a vital source of high-quality protein.
According to Johnson, “Science-based recommendations are crucial to sustaining consumer demand and supporting the pork industry’s role in global nutrition.”
As the global conversation around sustainable diets continues, the IMS and NPPC are focused on ensuring that policies reflect the essential role of meat in a healthy, sustainable food system.
