Ohio Invests $14 Million to Boost Local Meat Processing and Make Prices Affordable
Ohio’s meat industry just got a big boost with $14 million in new funding aimed at making locally sourced, high-quality meat more accessible and affordable for Ohio residents.
The Ohio Meat Processing Grant Program, launched under Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted, is now in its fourth round, focusing on expanding local meat processing capabilities.
“This program helps small businesses create the efficiency and productivity they need to compete and provide locally grown food at an affordable price,” said Lt. Governor Husted in a recent statement.
Expanding Facilities and Modernizing Equipment
This latest funding round will benefit 51 Ohio-based meat processing businesses, supporting everything from facility construction to upgrades on existing infrastructure.
Brian Baldridge, Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, noted that eligible companies had to match 35% of their grant award, stretching the $14 million investment to nearly $20 million.
This approach helps businesses acquire modern, more efficient equipment, which boosts productivity and local availability.
“So we’ve taken a $14 million grant and said, okay, 65% of it comes from the grant, 35% comes from that private sector company,” said Baldridge. “Just on their commitment, we turned 14 million into $20 million.”
Tackling Labor Shortages and Strengthening the Local Workforce
The program not only increases production but also addresses workforce needs. Baldridge pointed out that local processing plants and farms often face labor shortages.
With the new equipment and improved facilities, workers can be more efficient, making these local businesses stronger and better equipped to meet demand.
As one of Ohio’s largest industries, food and agriculture contributes a massive $124 billion to the state’s economy.
This initiative reflects a statewide commitment to enhancing the meat industry while making quality meat products more affordable and accessible.
The DeWine-Husted administration, alongside the Ohio General Assembly, aims to support local businesses and boost the local economy through this investment in Ohio’s food supply chain.
