Olympia Provisions and ButcherBox are two meat delivery companies that produce antibiotic-free and high-quality meats. That being said, there are many differences between the two, especially when it comes to menu and price.

We have tested both delivery companies and their subscription boxes to determine which one comes out on top. Below you will find their features and pricing guides.

ButcherBox vs Olympia Provisions: Key Differences

The main difference between these two companies is the menu.

While ButcherBox sells everything from grass-fed beef to wild-caught seafood, Olympia Provisions specialize in charcuterie, which is cured pork made into salami and sausages.

ButcherBox also works on a subscription box basis, whereas Olympia does both a la carte shopping, gift kits, and monthly subscriptions.

Olympia also offers a wholesale market for restaurants and companies, whereas ButcherBox is aimed at families.

Another difference between these two companies is that Olympia ships to all states around the US; however, ButcherBox does not ship to Alaska and Hawaii.

Comparing Their Features Head to Head

Comparison between two meat brands

Here is a quick look into the features both companies have to offer.

1. Meat Selection

ButcherBox mainly deals with beef, pork, chicken, and seafood. Depending on the season and availability, they may stock lamb and other poultry such as turkey, and this is ideal for customers looking for a range of meats and cuts.

The type of meat you will receive depends on your box selection, as some contain only specific types of meat.

Some products on the ButcherBox website include:

  • Ribeye steaks
  • Ground beef
  • Burgers
  • Strip steak
  • Chicken breasts
  • Flank steak
  • Filet mignon
  • Hot dogs
  • Boneless pork chops

Olympia Provisions specializes in charcuterie, and therefore they only sell pork products.

However, they do have a small range of homemade pickles and some gift packs that include cheeses and bread.

If you shop with this company, you can expect to find:

  • Chorizo Navarre
  • Salami Nola
  • Frankfurter sausages
  • Cured meats
  • Bacon
  • Charcuterie

2. Meat Sourcing and Quality

ButcherBox is a company that works closely with small farms around the US and Australia to source grass-fed, humanly-raised, and free-range meat.

All of these farms are said to follow the highest standards to ensure the meat is high-quality and follow sustainable practices [1].

The pigs are pasture-raised and fed an all-vegetarian diet without hormones or antibiotics. ButcherBox also has a range of heritage-bred pork that develops a fine marbling, causing the meat to be more juicy and tender when cooked.

All the chicken from ButcherBox is USDA-certified organic and eat a natural diet. The fish is wild-caught from seas around the US.

“We partner with people who are dedicated to doing the right thing—never cutting corners, and always looking for ways to improve.” - ButcherBox.

Olympia Provisions partners with small family-owned farms in the Pacific Northwest. This company ensures all of their pork is humanly raised environmentally.

They follow a “whole animal” policy, where they vow to use 100% of the meat. This often gets turned into pet treats, which they also sell on their website [2].

Olympia is the first USDA-approved salumeria in Oregon, and according to the website, they do everything to adhere to the strictest guidelines.

The cured meat and charcuterie ages naturally, without being cooked, hot-incubated, irradiated, or hurried. According to Olympia, this creates a deep, nuanced flavor and exquisite texture [3].

This meat company has an entire page dedicated to how they source meat, work towards better treatment of their animals, and help the environment while doing so.

3. Shipping and Packaging

ButcherBox currently ships to all US states, excluding Hawaii and Alaska. All orders come with free delivery no matter where you are located.

It isn’t possible to select specific dates or times to receive your order; however, you will receive a tracking number, which is good as you can prepare for the arrival. Typically, it will take 2 - 5 days for your order to arrive after shipping.

If you aren’t home to collect your meats, that is fine too, as ButcherBox deliveries contain plenty of ice to keep your items cool or frozen for up to eight hours after delivery.

All packaging is 100% environmentally friendly, making it easy to recycle.

Olympia ships to all US states, including Alaska and Hawaii. You can get free delivery on your food as long as you spend over $50. If you decide to get subscriptions from this company, you will receive free shipping no matter your order price.

Typically, shipping from Olympia takes 3 - 7business days. The company does state that orders may be split and shipped separately, as different items have different shipping days. The packages could also arrive via different carriers.

Packaging is mostly recyclable; however, you may have to check your local recycling laws for confirmation.

4. Menu Options and Prices

When shopping with ButcherBox, you have five boxes to choose from. The custom option allows for complete customization of your order, and the other four are all curated.

All boxes cost the same, but the custom option costs slightly more per pound.

  • Custom: Choice of pork, beef, poultry, seafood, and lamb or turkey if it is in stock.
  • Mixed: Contains all types of meat and food, but everything is chosen for you.
  • Two meats: Customers can choose to receive two types of meat inside their order. You may receive chops, burgers, steak, etc.
  • Only beef: If you would prefer to receive a mixture of burgers, steak, ground meat, etc., you can choose this option.

Olympia has six options, with varying ordering times: once a week, once every two weeks, or once a month. These packages typically contain food other than meat, such as cheese and pickles.

An example of one of their options is the Salami Postal Provisions, which contains a range of charcuterie from different countries. You can select how much salami you would like to receive each week.

ButcherBox vs Olympia Provisions: Our Winner

Both of these meat delivery services stock fine meats of excellent quality. That being said, they are both very different when it comes to meal options and prices.

We believe that ButcherBox wins this battle due to its variety of meats and affordability. This store stocks everything you need for great meat recipes, and they ensure all of their meat is antibiotic-free, humanly raised, and sourced through sustainable practices.
