If you’re looking to spice up your meals, there’s no end to meat delivery services you can try. They are a great option when you don’t feel like driving to the grocery store.

I’ve made it my mission to try every meat delivery service available. I’ve tried and reviewed countless meat subscription boxes, and today I’ll explain everything there is to know about Perini Ranch Steakhouse and ButcherBox.

ButcherBox vs Perini Ranch Steakhouse: Key Differences

The main difference between Perini Ranch Steakhouse and ButcherBox is that Perini Ranch is primarily a restaurant.

They are a famous steakhouse located in Buffalo Gap, Texas, nearby Abiline. They received a James Beard Foundation award in 2014, and their peppered beef has been selected as the mail-order gift of the year by The New York Times.

This steakhouse is famous for Tom Perini’s mesquite-smoked meats, which include brisket, ribeye, and peppered tenderloin.

They mostly offer West Texas BBQ. They only recently started offering online sales of their popular meats. They don’t have any meat subscription boxes but only sell individual cuts of meat.

On the other hand, ButcherBox is a meat subscription service. They offer five subscription boxes. You can’t buy an individual cut of meat, but you subscribe to one of their boxes, and it’ll be delivered to you every month.

Another big difference is in their meat offering. Perini Ranch has a very limited food menu compared to ButcherBox.

Finally, these two companies differ in how they source their meat. Perini Ranch meat comes straight from their ranch in Texas, while ButcherBox works with several family-owned farms and ranches across the US.

Comparing Their Features Head to Head

These are all the features of Perini Ranch and ButcherBox you should know about.

1. Meat Selection

I mentioned that Perini Rach has a very limited meat selection to choose from. This is because they are focused more on-location dining.

If you visit their establishment, you’ll see an extensive food options list to choose from — everything from Cowboy steaks to beef burgers.

However, the situation is different for online ordering. They currently offer only two cuts of beef:

  • Angus beef brisket
  • Mesquite smoked peppered beef tenderloin

Both of these are high-quality cuts so you won’t be disappointed with the meat quality.

On the other hand, ButcherBox has a much larger selection of meat available for order.

Their meat offering includes humanely raised beef, pork, chicken, and sustainably sourced seafood.

Some of their popular menu options are:

  • Ribeyes
  • Pork loin
  • Sirloin steak
  • Sockeye salmon
  • Breakfast sausage
  • Ground beef
  • Burger meats
  • Baby back ribs
  • Boneless pork chops
  • New York strip steaks

2. Meat Price

Paying someone to buy the packed meat

Compared to other meat delivery services I’ve tried, Perini Range Steakhouse has somewhat above-average prices:

  • Smoked Peppered Beef Tenderloin $155
  • Brisket $150

However, keep in mind that this is a specialized BBQ delivered cooked and seasoned. It saves you a lot of time when prepping for a meal.

Also, the beef tenderloin can serve 6 to 8 people, while the brisket can feed 15. These are big cuts of meat and are also a good choice when hosting a party.

On the other hand, here’s how ButcherBox meat subscription boxes are priced:

  • Custom box — You choose up to 15 cuts of meat. It comes in two options:
    1. 9 to 14 lbs $159
    2. 18 to 26 lbs $288
  • Mixed box — A selection of grass-fed beef, organic chicken, and heritage pork.
  • Beef and chicken
  • Beef and pork
  • All-beef box

The mixed box, two kinds of meats boxes, and all-beef box all come in two versions, priced differently:

  • 8 to 11 lbs $137 per box
  • 16 to 22 lbs $253 per box

This amounts to $5.71 per meal for a smaller box or $5.27 per meal for the larger box, which is more than affordable. The larger size is a good option if you have a family of meat lovers or a lot of freezer space.

3. Shipping

Shipping a butcherbox delivery

Perini Ranch offers shipping to all 50 US states. They ship using Federal Express shipping. When you place your order, you can choose the exact shopping day. This way, you’ll know exactly when your meat will arrive.

They don’t offer free shipping, but it depends on your location and is calculated at checkout.

The beef tenderloin is shipped overnight, and the brisket is frozen and vacuum sealed before shipping.

ButcherBox offers free shipping on all of its products. Plus, you’ll get free ground beef with all orders for the duration of your subscription.

They ship in all US states apart from Alaska and Hawaii. Once you place your order, you’ll receive an email with tracking information, so you’ll know exactly when your box will arrive.

“Our meat is frozen for freshness, safely packaged, and delivered to your door in an eco-friendly, insulated box. Our boxes are specifically designed to keep your meat within the optimal temperature range, with dry ice if necessary.”
- ButcherBox Official Website

The box arrives in a 100% recyclable cardboard box. The meats are vacuum sealed and flash frozen before packaging and packed with dry ice, so the meat will be fresh even if you don’t place it in the fridge right away.

The first order arrives between 3 to 7 days, and you can choose between 4, 6, or 8 weeks subscription frequency.

Stand Out Features

Apart from selling steaks, Perini Range has other stand-out features. They sell different tools, supplies, and resources that will turn you into a great meat cook, such as a cookbook, seasoning, and rubs.

They also sell clothes such as aprons, hats, and T-shirts, which can be an excellent gift for a fellow meat lover.

If you’re looking for a gift, you can also choose between their gift cards, which are available in e-gift card form, and traditional paper ones.

Finally, if you decide to visit them in person, you can shop at their country market. This is the Perini Ranch shop, where you can get all of these and many other products.
