Walmart Fires Up First Beef Plant, Creating 600 Jobs in Kansas

Last Updated On: June 28, 2025

Walmart is sharpening its stake in America’s meat game with the grand opening of its first owned-and-operated beef processing facility in Olathe, Kansas—an ambitious move meant to tighten control over its supply chain and bring premium Angus beef straight to store shelves.

Located at 20200 W. 167th St., the 320,000-square-foot site will officially open its doors Friday at 10 a.m. The plant is expected to generate over 600 jobs, feeding both local employment and Walmart’s long-term plans to carve out a bigger slice of the U.S. meat industry.

In a statement, the company framed the facility as a milestone in its plan to build an “end-to-end” supply chain for beef—following its 2022 investment in Nebraska-based Sustainable Beef LLC.

The aim? Boost quality, cut costs, and dodge the supply shocks that sent grocery aisles reeling in recent years.

“This facility strengthens our commitment to bringing top-tier Angus beef to customers across the Midwest,” the company said, calling it a key link in a chain designed for speed, control, and resilience.

As part of the launch, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation will hand out $90,000 in grants to local nonprofits—planting goodwill as firmly as it lays down infrastructure.

Friday’s ribbon-cutting will feature a lineup of state and corporate brass: Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, Olathe Mayor John Bacon, plant GM Steve Grant, and Walmart’s food exec VP John Laney are all slated to speak.
