West Valley Meat Plant Fined $12,500 After Worker’s Finger Amputation

Last Updated On: May 26, 2025

A meat-processing plant near Phoenix is facing a $12,524 fine after a worker lost a finger in a machinery accident last December.

The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH) found serious safety lapses at JBS Tolleson, where an employee’s hand got caught in a chain while performing maintenance.

The report points to missing safety guards on the machine and the worker wearing loose cotton gloves—a risky combo when dealing with moving parts.

ADOSH highlighted that the employee should have worn tight-fitting clothing and that machines should ideally be serviced while powered down.

This incident sheds light on ongoing challenges in worker safety within the meat-processing industry, reminding companies that cutting corners can cost more than just money—it can cost limbs.
