Hillshire Brands is pulling 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausage-on-a-stick products after consumers reported injuries tied to wood fragments baked into the batter.
The recall, one of the largest in recent years, touches household names like Jimmy Dean and State Fair.
The problem came to light after multiple complaints, including five injury cases. Investigators traced the culprit back to wooden sticks slipping into production before battering, a small misstep with massive fallout.
Products made between March 17 and September 26, 2025, are affected. Packages carry the establishment numbers EST-582 or P-894. Distribution reached grocery stores, schools, Department of Defense facilities, and online orders nationwide.
The recall underscores the razor-thin margin for error in food processing. For meat producers, one stray splinter can spark a multimillion-pound crisis, reminding the industry—and consumers—that safety in the food chain is as fragile as the toothpick it rests on.
