Father Sparks Debate After Ending Sons’ Vegan Diet on Doctor’s Advice

A father’s decision to reintroduce meat into his vegan sons’ diet, based on a doctor’s recommendation, has ignited a fiery debate.

Posting on Reddit, the user, who goes by the handle ThrowRA-Vegan876, shared his story of breaking away from a family tradition of veganism, much to the dismay of his ex-wife.

The father explained that after their divorce, he began eating meat again and noticed improvements in his own health.

Concerned about his sons’ nutrition during puberty, he consulted their doctor, who suggested slowly incorporating animal products into their diets.

“Following that advice, 6 weeks ago I decided to slowly introduce animal products into their diets whenever they had their time with me, but it has been slow,” he wrote.

“I don’t want to introduce it too fast and I gave them the choice with all the information I had and with what the doctor said.”

Ex-Wife’s Reaction

The ex-wife’s response was swift and fierce. She accused the father of undermining their vegan lifestyle out of spite and threatened to seek full custody.

“She’s calling me cruel and she’s been telling our boys that they should refuse to eat any animal products and say I’m forcing them,” the father wrote.

Despite the backlash, he insisted the change was for their well-being, noting that his sons were eager to try new foods like milk and eggs.

Public Reaction and Expert Insights

The father received widespread support on Reddit, where users agreed his actions were reasonable and health-driven.

“You’re doing it in consultation with a medical professional and allowing your children to choose,” one comment read.

Experts continue to debate whether a vegan diet is suitable for children. Registered dietitian Julia Zumpano of the Cleveland Clinic emphasizes that while veganism can be healthy, it requires careful monitoring. “You’ve got to ask the serious question, ‘Is your child meeting their nutrient needs on a vegan diet?’”

This situation highlights the complexities of co-parenting and dietary decisions, especially when health and ethics collide.
