Senator Ricketts Defends Nebraska’s Beef Industry Against Federal Dietary Guidelines

In his latest column, Senator Pete Ricketts strongly opposed proposed federal dietary guidelines that he believes unfairly target the beef industry.

As Nebraska’s beef production significantly supports the state and national economy, Ricketts criticized what he sees as a politically motivated attack on meat consumption.

Federal Guidelines and Anti-Beef Concerns

Every five years, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee provides recommendations to shape national dietary guidelines.

However, this year’s proposals suggest replacing beef and potatoes with plant-based alternatives like beans, lentils, and peas.

Ricketts called these recommendations “radical” and “anti-science,” arguing that they disregard beef’s nutritional value.

“It’s laughable that beef is somehow unhealthy. In addition to being tasty, red meat is the best way to deliver protein,” Ricketts stated. He emphasized that a 6-ounce serving of beef delivers 25 grams of protein and ten essential nutrients, including iron, zinc, and B vitamins.

Ricketts warned that shifting to plant-based substitutes could worsen nutrient deficiencies already prevalent among Americans.

Beef Production and Economic Importance

Nebraska is the leading beef-producing state, contributing over $12 billion annually to the economy.

The state leads in beef and veal exports and commercial cattle slaughter, with 6.8 million head processed last year. Ricketts highlighted the importance of marginal lands unsuitable for crops, which thrive under livestock production.

“Cattle production keeps marginal lands thriving,” Ricketts explained, emphasizing beef’s role in utilizing land that cannot support crop farming.

Supporting the Beef Industry

As both Governor and Senator, Ricketts has taken measures to support Nebraska’s beef producers. He declared “Meat on the Menu Day” to celebrate beef’s dietary importance and criticized policies that discourage meat consumption.

In the Senate, he has pushed for comprehensive Farm Bills, risk management tools, and legislation aimed at relieving regulatory burdens on farmers and ranchers.

“Food security is national security,” Ricketts asserted, reinforcing the critical role of agriculture in ensuring America’s independence from foreign food sources.
