Sustainable Pet Food Revolution: Friends & Family and Novel Farms Set to Launch Cultivated Meat Products for Pets by 2025

California’s Friends & Family Pet Food Co. is shaking up the pet food industry with plans to launch cultivated meat products for dogs and cats by 2025, in collaboration with cell agriculture startup, Novel Farms.

A Move Toward Sustainable and Ethical Pet Nutrition

This innovative venture is a move toward sustainable, ethical pet nutrition that targets environmentally-conscious pet owners, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, who are keen to make better choices for their furry companions.

Friends & Family, founded by Joshua Errett, Jonny Cruz, and Sarah Dodd in 2023, is already making strides toward replacing traditional factory-farmed animal protein with alternatives that focus on sustainability and humane practices.

Novel Farms’ Expertise in Cultivated Meat

Novel Farms, a startup that began in 2020, is known for its pioneering work in cellular agriculture. They specialize in cultivating pork and have already developed the world’s first marbled cultivated pork loin.

Their proprietary microbial fermentation process produces cost-effective and scalable 3D bioscaffolds that allow fat and muscle cells to grow, significantly lowering the cost of cultivated meat production while improving texture and flavor.

Partnership with UMAMI Bioworks for Seafood Treats

Beyond this collaboration, Friends & Family has also partnered with Singapore’s UMAMI Bioworks to develop cultivated seafood treats for cats. These treats will feature high-value microalgae and essential nutrients, reinforcing the company’s commitment to creating premium, sustainable pet food.

Currently in the testing and prototyping stages, these products are slated for release in the San Francisco Bay Area by 2025.

This joint venture signals a significant shift in the pet food market, with a focus on sustainability and ethical practices that mirror the growing demand for responsible food production, not just for humans, but for pets as well.

Paving the Way for a Greener Future in Pet Care

By merging cultivated meat and plant-based nutrition, Friends & Family and Novel Farms are paving the way for a greener future in pet care, aligning with global movements toward reducing environmental impacts while providing pets with high-quality, nutritious food.
