USMEF Names New Chair and Focuses on Market Expansion
The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) wrapped up its annual strategic planning conference in Tucson, Arizona, by announcing its 2024-25 officer team.
Steve Hanson, a Nebraska rancher and former chair of the Nebraska Beef Council, has been named the new USMEF chair. He succeeds Minnesota pork producer Randy Spronk.
Hanson emphasized the importance of international marketing for U.S. red meat. “The Operating Committee is where I first got my exposure to USMEF, which invests our checkoff dollars so well and adds value to the beef carcass,” Hanson shared.
New Officers and Industry Focus
Joining Hanson on the officer team are Chair-elect Jay Theiler of Agri Beef Co., Vice Chair Dave Bruntz of Bruntz Farming & Feeding, and Secretary-Treasurer Darin Parker of PMI Foods.
The team is committed to addressing challenges in international markets while fostering collaboration across agricultural sectors.
USMEF also stressed the significance of market diversification. Scott Reynolds, Assistant Vice President of Marketing Programs, revealed a 22% increase in investments for new and emerging markets over the past five years.
These markets, particularly in Africa, are seen as promising areas for growth. “By 2050, one in four people in the world will be African,” said Matt Copeland, USMEF Africa Representative. He highlighted upcoming events in Ghana and new restaurant openings in Morocco and South Africa featuring U.S. beef.
Producer Insights and Honorees
The conference featured a panel of livestock producers sharing their experiences with international markets. “Exports are not something you do in six months; it’s a long-term strategy,” said outgoing Chair Randy Spronk.
USMEF also honored several contributors, including Nick Giordano with the Michael J. Mansfield Award and Mark Jagels with the Distinguished Service Award. The Montana Beef Council received the Million Dollar Club Award for its consistent support of USMEF’s marketing programs.
The federation’s next gathering is scheduled for May 21-23 in Fort Worth, Texas, where members will continue shaping the future of U.S. meat exports.
