Utah Allocates $3 Million in Grants to Bolster Local Meat Processing
The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF) recently announced the distribution of $3 million in grants to enhance the state’s food supply chain and increase processing capacity for local meat products.
This funding aims to address Utah’s ongoing deficit in meat processing infrastructure.
In 2022, the Utah State Legislature allocated an initial $1 million for the program. Following its success, additional funds were provided in 2023 and 2024, bringing the total to $3 million.
“Utah faces significant processing challenges for locally produced agricultural goods,” said UDAF Commissioner Craig Buttars.
“By supporting processing infrastructure, we secure the future of Utah’s agricultural producers, strengthen regional food supply chains, and ensure consumers have access to nutritious local products.”
During the 2024 application period, UDAF received over 113 requests totaling $10 million, although only $3 million could be distributed. Some notable meat-related grant recipients include:
- 101 Custom Meats — Virgin, Utah (Washington County)
- 3 Springs Land and Livestock — Kamas, Utah (Summit County)
- Circle V Meat — Spanish Fork, Utah (Utah County)
- Davis Custom Meats — Ogden, Utah (Weber County)
- Final Cut Meats — St. George, Utah (Washington County)
- Juniper Meat Company — Willard, Utah (Box Elder County)
- Utah Beef Producers — Richfield, Utah (Sevier County)
Since the program’s inception, UDAF has received over $34 million in requests and awarded grants to 60 businesses across the state.
These grants are crucial for the sustainability and growth of Utah’s local food system.
