Calgary Business Ordered to Close Over Uninspected Meat Sales
In Calgary, Alberta Health Services (AHS) recently issued closure orders to Gimsap African Asian Mart, a store found to be selling uninspected meat.
Inspectors discovered uninspected items such as “blackened cow heads, sheep heads, cow hooves, and cow intestines,” according to the closure report.
AHS identified further health concerns, including uncovered meat stored directly on the floor, dirty surfaces, and structural damage to the store’s facilities.
Additionally, poor lighting, clogged sinks, and a lack of sanitation protocols were noted. The southeast Calgary location of the store will remain closed until AHS confirms that the violations have been fully addressed.
The store’s northwest Calgary branch was also flagged. Inspectors found “an uninspected blackened meat head” and other unlabelled meat products lacking proper invoices.
AHS has given this location until Friday to comply with food safety standards, which includes verifying suppliers and implementing proper storage practices. The owners of Gimsap African Asian Mart were not available for comment.
This incident follows a pattern of recent closures in Calgary related to uninspected meat sales. Earlier in October, AHS had shut down three other Calgary stores for similar violations, citing concerns over consumer health risks and illegal livestock slaughtering.
