Nick’s Roast Beef and Dockside Bensalem Close Abruptly Amid Financial Struggles

Northeast Philadelphia’s Nick’s Roast Beef and Bucks County’s Dockside Bensalem, both owned by restaurateur Matt Rossi, shuttered their doors unexpectedly on November 17, 2024, citing financial hardships.

The closures leave a gap in the local dining scene, particularly as the holidays approach.

A Sudden End to Local Favorites

Rossi launched Nick’s Roast Beef on Woodhaven Road in 2018, building a reputation for its lively sports bar atmosphere and iconic roast beef sandwiches.

Dockside Bensalem opened in 2023 and offered a picturesque setting with a deck overlooking the Neshaminy Creek. Both establishments were known for hosting live music and community events.

In a brief statement, Rossi explained the decision: “Financially, we weren’t able to continue. It’s as simple and cut and dried as that.”

The closures mark another challenge in Rossi’s long tenure in the restaurant industry, following the shutdown of his Nick’s Roast Beef location on Cottman Avenue in February 2023 due to a steep rent hike.

Community Impact and Employee Support

The sudden closures left employees and customers reeling, with many expressing frustration over the timing so close to the holiday season.

Rossi addressed concerns, assuring that refunds for canceled events were being processed. “We’ve talked to everyone, and every single person is being refunded,” he said.

Other local businesses stepped in to support displaced employees and customers. Chickie’s & Pete’s invited former workers to apply for open positions, while Sweet Lucy’s BBQ offered its catering space to impacted customers.

Musicians who regularly performed at Nick’s were encouraged to reach out to Broken Goblet Brewing, which expressed solidarity with those affected.

Rossi’s Continued Ventures

Despite the closures, Rossi remains active in the food industry. He continues to oversee the Philadelphia Food Trucks Commissary in Yeadon, Delaware County, which he rescued from financial turmoil in 2022.

His mobile catering company also remains operational, though no future plans for new restaurant ventures have been announced.

A Reflection of Broader Challenges

The closures of Nick’s Roast Beef and Dockside Bensalem underscore the difficulties faced by restaurateurs amid rising costs and economic uncertainties.

For Rossi, this marks the end of an era for two beloved local dining spots, though the community’s response highlights its resilience and support for those impacted.
