Girlfriend’s Push for Vegetarianism Sparks Tension Over Food Shaming

A recent Reddit story has stirred conversations online after a man shared the struggles he’s facing in his relationship. His girlfriend, who switched to a vegetarian diet six months ago, has been subtly — and lately, not so subtly — trying to influence his meat-heavy diet.

The boyfriend, an avid meat lover who eats steak about five to six times a week, wrote, “I (26M) eat a lot of steak… My girlfriend (26F) turned vegetarian about 6 months ago, and she will never eat anything I cook, except for the sides.”

He explains that she initially never commented on his dietary choices, but that changed about a month ago. He started noticing her watching YouTube videos that focus on health risks linked to red meat and environmental impacts, leading her to question his choices.

“Initially she started off by asking me whether I was concerned about the amount of meat I consume, in terms of health risks,” he shared.

Over time, her gentle inquiries turned into more direct comments. “Later on over the month she started bringing up how ruminants can be detrimental to the environment… and animal cruelty.” Finally, she told him outright to cut out red meat completely.

He explained that her campaign culminated with her trying to make him watch videos on YouTube about animal cruelty, a line he wasn’t willing to cross.

“I told her that if she doesn’t want to eat meat, that’s her choice, but she shouldn’t force her beliefs on other people,” he explained, adding that he has never once commented on her eating habits.

He ended the post by saying that, after the argument, she went to bed without talking to him.

Many Reddit users sympathized with his point of view, with one commenter noting, “The relationship feels like it’s in trouble.”

Another suggested he could perhaps make a small effort to accommodate her, but ultimately believed he wasn’t in the wrong.

As the debate over personal dietary choices and relationship boundaries continues, this couple’s story highlights the challenges that can arise when lifestyle changes aren’t fully accepted by both partners.
