U.S. Meat’s Global Expansion: Opportunities and Challenges Ahead

The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) convened in Tucson, Arizona, on November 6, 2024, to strategize the future of American meat in global markets.

Amid post-election uncertainty, discussions zeroed in on trade policies, agricultural shifts, and the ripple effects on U.S. beef and pork exports.

Rising Demand Amid Fierce Competition

Global demand for U.S. meat is surging, driven by a growing middle class seeking high-quality protein. The USMEF predicts a record-breaking 2024 for pork exports, expected to exceed 3 million metric tons, valued at $8.63 billion.

Beef exports are also projected to climb 5% from 2023, reaching 1.28 million metric tons worth $10.5 billion. Yet, U.S. producers face stiff competition, particularly from Brazil, which dominates exports to markets like Mexico, Central America, and Japan.

Despite challenges, American meat’s reputation for quality remains unmatched. “We export the highest-quality meat in the world,” USMEF representatives noted, emphasizing the premium appeal of U.S. beef, pork, and lamb.

Navigating Geopolitical Headwinds

Trade relationships remain pivotal, especially with major partners like China and Mexico. China’s robust demand for grains, fertilizer, and beef has bolstered U.S. exports, though potential policy shifts could complicate this dynamic.

Meanwhile, Mexico’s new administration under President Claudia Sheinbaum introduces fresh complexities. Policies favoring Cuba and restrictions on genetically modified imports signal a possible pivot in Mexico-U.S. trade relations.

Upcoming reviews of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement in 2026 could further reshape regional trade. Canada’s prior challenges to U.S. country-of-origin labeling at the WTO underscore ongoing tensions.

Seeking New Horizons

To stay ahead, the USMEF is aggressively exploring untapped markets in Latin America, Africa, and beyond. Strategic diversification is key to maintaining America’s edge in the global meat market.

As trade winds shift, U.S. negotiators face a daunting yet critical task: ensuring American meat continues to thrive on the world stage.
