Horse Thefts in Florida Linked to Black Market for Meat, Authorities Say

In a heartbreaking turn of events for Florida’s Treasure Coast, four horses have been stolen in St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties, and authorities suspect these incidents may be connected to an illegal black market for horse meat.

“I would love to just think this is a coincidence,” shared St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson. “But the reality of it is it’s not.”

Families Devastated by Loss

One of the victims, Melanie Stavert, shared the emotional toll her family is enduring after their horse, Okie, was taken from their Fort Pierce property on November 8.

“The girls, they wanted a horse for a long time,” Stavert said. “They finally got one, and now he’s gone.” Her eldest daughter Ava expressed her anguish, saying, “He was the best. He’d do anything for me.”

The loss has deeply impacted the family. “You can see the tear stains in her pillow,” Stavert added. “It’s just so sad.”

Possible Connection to Illegal Horse Slaughter

Sheriff Pearson suspects the thefts may be linked to the illegal slaughter of horses. “We do know that there is a black market for horse meat,” he stated. “I hope to God that’s not the case.”

Richard Couto, founder of the Animal Recovery Mission, is stepping in to support the investigation. His organization has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible.

“These rewards have worked in the past,” Couto said. “In Palm Beach, they’ve worked in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, and we’re hoping that it works here.”

Justice and Accountability Sought

For now, the Stavert family and others impacted are holding out hope for justice. “I hope they put an end to all the horse slaughters, and there are harsher punishments for people that do these sick crimes,” said Stavert. “It is just sick.”

This series of thefts serves as a chilling reminder of the ongoing challenges in combating illegal animal trafficking. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward and help bring closure to the grieving families.
