How to Avoid Common Mistakes and Build a Perfect Charcuterie Board

The holiday season is here, and charcuterie boards are often the centerpiece of festive gatherings. While creating the ultimate meat and cheese spread may seem straightforward, expert tips can help you sidestep common pitfalls and craft a visually appealing and delicious board.

Skip the Non-Essentials

Dominick DiBartolomeo, cheesemonger and owner of The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills, advises keeping charcuterie boards focused on edible and appetizing elements.

“I personally stay away from the edible flowers and things like that. Most people put too many fillers on the board that guests won’t eat,” he told The Daily Meal.

DiBartolomeo emphasizes that less is more. Non-charcuterie elements like flowers can distract from the board’s appeal, making it look unappetizing or confusing. Guests may hesitate to eat flowers, even if they are edible, as their flavors are often too subtle to contribute meaningfully.

Build with Balance

To create a board that looks and tastes cohesive, start by organizing your ingredients. This ensures that every item has its place and complements the overall design.

If your board looks sparse, DiBartolomeo suggests using fruits like grapes, dried apricots, figs, or cranberries. These sweet additions pair beautifully with salty cheeses and meats, offering a satisfying balance of flavors. For an extra touch, grilled figs with Greek yogurt and spiced nuts can add sophistication.

Sweet or Savory: Choose Your Focus

For a sweet board, include jams, honey, and creamy cheeses like brie or camembert. Drizzle floral honey over blue cheese for a luxurious touch.

If you prefer savory options, include pickled vegetables, olives, or sea-salted Marcona almonds. Pair these with toasted pita or sourdough for a hearty snack.

If you want a floral aesthetic without using flowers, try crafting salami into rose shapes or arranging fruits and vegetables into floral patterns. This maintains the board’s visual appeal while ensuring everything is edible and flavorful.

With thoughtful organization and the right ingredients, your charcuterie board can wow guests without relying on unnecessary fillers.
