U.S. Pork and Beef See Strong Growth in the Cuban Market

The U.S. red meat industry is making significant strides in Cuba, a market where its presence has historically been limited.

According to the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF), pork and beef exports to Cuba have surged this year, fueled by a growing private sector and increasing demand.

A recent educational seminar hosted by USMEF in Miami connected U.S. suppliers, exporters, and Cuban buyers, laying the groundwork for smoother trade.

“There’s excitement about the market,” said USMEF Caribbean Representative Elizabeth Wunderlich. “Our members jumped at the chance to meet all of these buyers.”

Pork Exports Soar as Production in Cuba Declines

Paul Johnson of FocusCuba highlighted the stark contrast in pork production trends. “Pork production in Cuba is down about 90%, and this new private sector in Cuba has the resources to fill in those needs for the Cuban consumers and for tourism,” he explained.

This has led to a dramatic increase in U.S. pork exports, which reached 5,843 metric tons (mt) through September 2024, a 322% rise compared to the same period last year. These exports were valued at $17.2 million, reflecting a 236% increase.

Beef Gains Momentum

Although Cuba primarily imports canned beef products, U.S. exports have grown exponentially. Between January and September, beef exports totaled 3,234 mt, a staggering 1,500% increase from the previous year, valued at $5.4 million.

The seminar also underscored the growing opportunities for U.S. businesses in Cuba, as noted by Alicia Rodriguez of American Foods International.

“This has been phenomenal for us,” she remarked, emphasizing the value of meeting Cuban buyers face-to-face for the first time in such a setting.

Outlook on Growth

With Cuba’s private sector stepping up to address consumer needs and tourism demands, U.S. red meat exports are expected to expand further.

Johnson noted that the ability to sell directly to multiple Cuban buyers, rather than a single state entity, represents a game-changing opportunity.

These developments signal a promising future for U.S. pork and beef in Cuba, providing economic benefits to both producers and Cuban consumers.
