The upcoming Driftless Region Beef Conference will address timely issues as the national beef cow herd reaches record-low numbers.

Scheduled for January 23-24, 2025, at the Grand River Convention Center in Dubuque, the event will explore market strategies and the future of herd expansion.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Derrell Peel of Oklahoma State University and Dr. Troy Rowan from the University of Tennessee. Peel will delve into the current cattle cycle, herd rebuilding prospects, and economic trends, with an additional outlook session on Friday.

Rowan will highlight the role of genetics in building resilient, profitable cattle, discussing tools like commercial genomics and the benefits of crossbreeding.

Thursday Sessions and Bull Pen Discussion

On Thursday, Dr. Marta Kohmann of the University of Wisconsin will lead a session on pasture and forage planning.

The day concludes with the popular “Bull Pen” discussion, featuring locker plant managers who will share insights on local beef marketing.

Friday Breakout Sessions

Friday’s breakout sessions cater to both cow herd and feedlot operations. Topics for cow herds include crossbreeding, pasture management, heifer development, and weed control.

Feedlot discussions will cover risk management, targeted feeding strategies, and managing beef-dairy cattle. The conference will wrap up with Peel’s economic market outlook.
