Arkansas Hunters Combat Hunger Crisis with Venison Donations
With Arkansas leading the nation in food insecurity, local hunters are taking action through Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry (AHFH), a nonprofit that has been tackling food scarcity for 25 years.
AHFH collaborates with hunters across the state to provide high-quality venison to local food banks and shelters, supplying millions of meals to families in need.
By encouraging hunters to donate legally harvested game, the organization has become a valuable source of nutritious protein, especially crucial given the recent rise in food insecurity. According to AHFH, it serves as a “lifeline for communities across the state.”
Founded in 2000, AHFH was inspired by the idea of reducing food waste and connecting the hunting community to public service. Since then, the organization has provided more than 4 million meals.
AHFH has built a network of participating meat processors who prepare venison in line with health regulations.
Hunters can drop off deer at these locations, where AHFH covers the processing fees, ensuring that “each deer donated…can provide 200 servings of nutritious meat.” With one in five residents facing food scarcity, these efforts are vital for the community.
Beyond donation, AHFH also educates the public about responsible hunting and food donation. They emphasize sustainable hunting and the role hunters play in conservation and community support.
The organization’s mission aligns with educating hunters and promoting the benefits of food donation through sustainable practices.
As the deer season unfolds, AHFH urges hunters to join their mission by donating harvested game, ensuring that Arkansans in need don’t go to bed hungry.
Hunters can find local participating processors through AHFH’s website, joining the effort to transform food insecurity in Arkansas.
