Maine Hunters Join Forces Against Hunger with Game Meat Donations

In Maine’s hunting season, generosity isn’t just about skill; it’s about heart. Through the state’s Hunters for the Hungry program, Maine hunters are donating their game meat to help provide thousands of nutritious meals for those in need.

A single deer can feed up to 200 people, illustrating the profound impact each donation can have in communities battling food insecurity.

The Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry’s (DACF) initiative has grown under the guidance of Gus Nelson, Director of The Emergency Food Assistance Program, and Nathan Lord, a member of Maine’s Ending Hunger Corps.

Thanks to their efforts, four new processors have joined, raising the number of licensed processors to 25 across the state. These local partners ensure that donations are safely processed and swiftly delivered to food pantries, shelters, and community kitchens.

A Community Effort

“This program allows hunters to give back in a meaningful way, turning their harvest into life-saving meals for neighbors in need,” said Nelson.

As more processors join the program, the outreach to communities in need widens, spreading a spirit of community and compassion across Maine.

Hunters are encouraged to participate by donating all or part of their legally harvested game, supporting Maine’s mission to reduce hunger.

The donation process is straightforward, with processors handling the meat at no cost to hunters, ensuring a seamless journey from forest to table.

How to Contribute

Hunters can contact approved processors to donate, with each contribution adding vital, high-quality protein to local food supplies. Even a small portion of a harvest can make a significant difference.

The Hunters for the Hungry program highlights the power of the community and the impact of local efforts in the fight against hunger. For more information, hunters and others interested can visit the DACF website.
