Is the Carnivore Diet Truly Beneficial for Your Health?

The carnivore diet, consisting mainly or entirely of animal-based foods, has gained significant attention for its supposed health benefits. Supporters claim it boosts energy, alleviates autoimmune issues, and enhances performance in sports.

The Penrith Panthers, 2024 grand final winners, attribute part of their success to this diet, while social media influencers hail it as a healing solution.

The diet’s popularity comes despite warnings from health experts, who link high meat consumption to increased risks of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and colorectal cancer.

Critics argue that it deprives the body of essential nutrients from plant-based foods, potentially degrading gut health over time. For many proponents, the appeal lies in the psychological benefits of following a strict, meat-only regimen.

Mike Scanlan, a 41-year-old from Sydney, switched to the carnivore diet to manage his autoimmune issues, which included asthma, eczema, and migraines.

After other diets failed, he turned to a diet of strictly meat, experiencing noticeable improvements in his health and energy levels.

However, while Scanlan’s experience showcases the potential benefits of the diet, experts like Professor Luigi Fontana caution that eliminating plant foods can ultimately lead to long-term health problems.

Extreme diets like carnivore may offer short-term relief for certain conditions, but balance is key. Experts agree that while reducing processed foods is beneficial, a sustainable, diverse diet that includes both plant and animal foods is crucial for long-term health.

The consensus remains that moderation, rather than elimination, is the best path to well-being.
