Listeria Outbreak Tied to Recalled Meat Leads to Tragedy in California
A California woman tragically lost her unborn twins after contracting Listeria from recalled ready-to-eat meat products, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The outbreak, linked to Yu Shang Food Inc. products, has affected 11 people across four states, leaving nine hospitalized.
Health officials, including the CDC, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and state agencies, have been investigating the outbreak, which traces back to October 2021. Victims’ ages vary, highlighting the widespread reach of this contamination.
Impact of the Recall
Listeria monocytogenes was confirmed in samples taken from both the woman and one of her twins. However, only the mother and one twin are counted in official outbreak statistics.
Among the 11 cases, an infant who had contracted Listeria has since recovered. Officials suspect the actual case count may be higher since many individuals recover without medical treatment or testing.
The recalled products, all bearing the “Yu Shang” label and establishment number “P46684” or “EST. M46684,” were produced before October 28.
Initially issued on November 9, the recall expanded on November 21 to include additional items. These products were sold nationwide in various retail locations.
A Stark Warning from Health Authorities
Public health authorities emphasize that Listeria poses severe risks, particularly to pregnant individuals, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms range from fever and muscle aches to more severe complications like stiff neck and confusion. Pregnant individuals face heightened risks, including miscarriage, premature birth, and newborn infections.
The CDC advises consumers to discard or return any recalled products. Businesses are also urged to follow food safety protocols and refrain from selling the affected items.
This incident underscores the importance of rigorous food safety standards to prevent further tragedies. Consumers experiencing symptoms after consuming the recalled products should seek immediate medical attention.
