Northwoods Meat Market in Full Swing as Deer Season Approaches
As deer season in Wisconsin nears, Lake Tomahawk Meat Market is making comprehensive preparations to handle the expected influx of venison processing orders.
With a reputation built since the 1990s, this market has been a go-to spot for hunters in the Northwoods looking to turn their game into high-quality meat products.
Manager Frank Mitchell, who eagerly anticipates each season, describes the market’s transition through the hunting year: “It stays pretty busy around here. It’s nice. We go from summer, then we go into bear season, and now we’re right in the middle of archery season with rifle season coming in a couple weeks.”
With a wide array of products on offer, the meat market processes all its meat in-house, ensuring freshness and quality in every cut. Among their offerings are venison sausages, steaks, jerky, and bacon, as well as custom items made to meet customer requests.
“We make our beef sticks you can get,” says Mitchell. “You can get venison summer sausage, any kind of venison fresh brat you’d like, any venison smoked brat. We do venison bacon. So, anything that you think of we can probably make for you.”
The busiest time of the year, deer season is crucial for the market’s operations, and the staff is well-prepared. Hunters bringing in deer can expect their animals to be tested for Chronic Wasting Disease, a necessary step before processing begins.
Once cleared, Mitchell and his team quickly move to prepare the meat, with most orders taking only three to four days. The market has expanded its workforce to meet the season’s demand. “We got a lot of help,” Mitchell notes, adding, “This is actually the most employees we’ve had in six years. We have 10 employees.”
Mitchell takes pride in the joy and satisfaction that his customers express, especially after tasting the results. “They’re so happy with the result they get,” he says. “And when they come back in and they tell us how phenomenal it was, that’s rewarding.”
With demand growing as the season approaches, Mitchell encourages hunters to bring in their game sooner rather than later to avoid longer wait times.
