Ohio Hunters Encouraged to Donate Deer Meat to Food Banks
In an effort to tackle food insecurity, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has announced a partnership with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) to encourage deer hunters to donate venison to local food banks.
This initiative offers a practical solution for hunters who have surplus meat while addressing hunger in Ohio communities.
Hunters can drop off their harvested deer at one of 34 certified deer processing shops throughout the state. These facilities process the meat into venison, which is then distributed to charitable organizations.
According to ODNR, a single deer can provide up to 50 pounds of meat, equating to around 200 meals. This program not only benefits families in need but also supports sustainable hunting practices by ensuring that harvested game is put to good use.
This partnership is made possible through a $30,000 grant from ODNR’s Division of Wildlife, which funds the processing and distribution of the meat. It’s a win-win for Ohio, as it fosters community support, reduces waste, and makes a significant impact on hunger.
If you’re a hunter in Ohio, consider participating in this program. Not only does it provide an opportunity to give back, but it also ensures that your hunting efforts have a broader impact on your community.
This initiative is a shining example of how local partnerships can transform community challenges into opportunities for collective action.
