Louisiana Hunters Urged to Donate Surplus Game Meat to Aid Local Families This Season

As deer hunting season kicks off in Louisiana, Governor Jeff Landry has issued a call to action, encouraging hunters to donate a portion or all of their wild game harvests to assist families facing food insecurity.

In a proclamation for Wild Game Meat Donation Month, Landry emphasized the importance of this initiative, highlighting the need for affordable protein sources in communities statewide.

This effort, supported by the National Rifle Association (NRA), positions hunting as not only a tradition but a valuable community service. Landry’s statement promotes the practice as a “food source, a right, and a vital wildlife management tool.”

Hunters are encouraged to bring their harvests to participating meat processors who have partnered with Hunters for the Hungry (H4H), a local organization dedicated to helping the food insecure.

The program allows hunters to drop off deer or hog meat at various locations in Northwest Louisiana, such as Cotten’s Grocery in Caddo and K&B Farms in Natchitoches, among others. The processing costs are covered by H4H, ensuring that families in need receive the meat at no charge.

“We hope that this month will serve as a reminder of the important role that hunting plays in the community and the responsibility we share as the Sportsman’s Paradise,” Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Madison Sheahan shared.

The program benefits families across the state by providing much-needed protein in a cost-effective and community-centered way.

With support from Louisiana’s hunters, the initiative not only aids local families but strengthens the broader community bond, showcasing how sportsmanship can directly impact those in need.
